The Department of Biological Sciences offers teaching, research, supervision and mentorship in a broad range of biological disciplines to prepare students to face a wide variety of career paths. Courses include microbiology, ecology, physiology, biotechnology, entomology, biochemistry, pathology, genetics, protozoology, parasitology, aquatic biology, among others. Besides theory, the students are exposed to various avenues of knowledge and skills that include practical lessons, academic visits and industrial attachment in various institutions such as the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), National Museums of Kenya (NMK), among others. The students also carry out research projects during their 4th year that expose them to hands-on research in their areas of interest, with guidance from lecturers and technologists. The skills developed during their industrial attachment and field visits enable them to think outside the box and apply that knowledge in their research. Once the research is complete, the students do oral presentations to present their work. This provides an opportunity to share their research with colleagues and departmental faculty, and enhance the confidence required to give presentations to wider audiences. The projects create a leeway for jobs and scholarships to further their studies.
